SBS swoop in for Wallabies Spring Tour Test rights

National free-to-air broadcaster SBS has announced that they have picked up the rights to Australia’s Spring Tour Tests against France and England.

The Wallabies take on France on November 19 at Paris’ Stade de France and then take against England at Twickenham on December 4.

The deal finally allows for some free-to-air coverage of the Wallabies playing in the northern hemisphere.

No free-to-air broadcaster was willing to pick up the rights to any Wallabies matches until SBS stepped in, while pay-tv broadcaster beIN Sports only purchased the rights for the five Tests in two allotments.

BeIN Sports secured the rights to cover Australia’s recent win in Wales last weekend, as well as this weekend’s clash with Scotland in Edinburgh and a Test against Ireland in Dublin on November 26. While only initially purchasing the rights to those three Tests, beIN opted to pick up the rights to show the France and England Tests when no other broadcaster was forthcoming.

“SBS is pleased it can bring the very best of world rugby to Australians free-to-air,” SBS director of sport Ken Shipp said in a statement.
