In Brief: Chelsea’s visit to Perth confirmed and more

Kicking off with football news plus more for this Monday.

Football: It has been confirmed that A-League club Perth Glory will take on English Premier League heavyweights Chelsea in a friendly in 2018 during the opening year of operations at the 60,000 capacity Perth Stadium.

It will be the second time Chelsea have played a friendly Australia in three years.

A deal to play the friendly first came to light in June 2016 when The West Australian reported that Chelsea was being targeted for a marquee match against the Glory.

Football: A-League clubs are reportedly fuming at Football Federation Australia’s attempt to delay FIFA-imposed reform to its contentious voting structure.

Chairman Steven Lowy and chief executive David Gallop will meet with FIFA president Gianni Infantino in Zurich on Wednesday, reportedly to request an extension to the March deadline for local reform, requested by the world governing body to address concerns about the lack of democratic process in FFA board elections.

The Australian Professional Football Clubs Association (APFCA), which represents all 10 A-League clubs, released a statement on Monday saying the move was “unacceptable if the visit by the FFA Chairman Steven Lowy and FFA CEO David Gallop to the FIFA President either delays the long-overdue reform of the FFA General Assembly, or creates a circumvention of the committed process of engagement with stakeholders of the Australian game.”

Rugby Union: The smallest crowd in Wellington Sevens history has threatened the future viability of the event.

A reported crowd of about 10,000 was on hand for each of the event’s two days, well down on the last year’s average of 14,000.

New Zealand Rugby will announce in March whether the event will remain in the capital.
