Happy Birthday, Sunny! 10 facts about Sunil Gavaskar you might not know

July 10 is the birthday of one of India’s greatest sportspersons, Sunil ‘Sunny’ Gavaskar. The first man to score ten thousand runs in Test cricket and also the first player to score more than thirty centuries, Gavaskar was among the best batsmen in the world during his era (1971-87). He still holds the record for the most runs made in a debut Test series and the most Test centuries against the West Indies and is the only player to have scored a century and a double century in the same Test Match twice. But there was more to the man some labelled ‘Cricket’s Napoleon’ for his relative lack of height than just cricket records. So as he goes past yet another year in his life, here is a look at ten facts that not too many might know about Sunil Manohar Gavaskar:

He might have ended up catching fish rather than scoring runs but for a sharp-eyed relative. After he was born, a nurse accidentally placed him next to a fisherwoman. No one noticed the change but one of Gavaskar’s uncles had noticed a birthmark near his ear and when he did not see it in the other child, he brought the matter to the notice of the hospital and baby Sunil was duly returned to his parents.

The first casualty
of Gavaskar’s cricketing ability was not a cricketer, but his own mother, Meenal. Well before his teens, they were playing cricket in his house and one of his patent straight drives (well, not patented yet, but it would become famous) hit her in the face. She carried on gamely, but he promptly reverted to defensive mode.

The ambition to play for India came to him when he saw the Indian team pullovers of his uncle, Madhav Mantri, who had played for India. When he asked if he could have one of the pullovers, Mantri told him sternly that they had to be earned.

He idolised West Indian Rohan Kanhai and India’s ML Jaisimha when he was growing up. He also is the brother in law of Indian cricket legend Gundappa Vishwanath (small wonder he planned to name his son, Rohan Jaivishwa Gavaskar, although he eventually became better known as Rohan Gavaskar). He wanted to wear his hair long and over his collar a la Ian Chappell, the charismatic Australian cricketer, as well but had to give up the effort, as his hair was too wavy for the effect.

He might be known as a prolific batsman, but he was also a very prolific writer. He is the only Indian cricketer with as many as four books to his name during his playing career – Sunny Days, Idols, Runs ‘n Ruins and One Day Wonders.

He played the lead part in a Marathi film, Saavli Premachi. And yes, he even danced and did the prerequisite running around the trees in the film (check it here if you believe us not). He also made a special appearance as himself in the Hindi film, Malamaal.

He may have terrorised pace bowlers, but he himself was terrified of dogs. Legendary English all rounder Ian Botham once trapped him inside a phone booth by simply standing outside it with a massive dog. Gavaskar came out only after Botham and the mutt were persuaded to go away.

He remains one of the few cricketers to have got a haircut from the umpire in the course of a match. Batting against England at Old Trafford in 1974, he found his hair getting in his eyes all the time (yes, they used to bat without helmets and even caps in those days) and asked the umpire, Dickie Bird, to trim his hair. Bird did so with a pair of scissors he had kept to actually cut threads from the seam of the cricket ball, if needed, muttering “the things umpires have to do these days.” He must have done a good job – Gavaskar scored a century!

Sunil Gavaskar, Sunil, Gavaskar, Sunny, Sunil Gavaskar birthday, Gavaskar birthday, Sunil Gavaskar records, Gavaskar records, Gavaskar photos, Gavaskar Indian cricket, Cricket India, CricketSticking to Old Trafford 1974, Gavaskar is also perhaps the only player in Test cricket to have scored a Test century in a torn pair of trousers. They got torn from the inside of his left thigh in the early part of his innings, but he refused to change them and went on to play one of the greatest innings of his career. Some critics would jokingly remark that “getting Sunny to score runs is easy – just tear his trousers.” (you can see the innings at here)

Although accused of being obsessed with records, Gavaskar himself never used to look at the scoreboard while batting and thus often never had any idea of his score. A great example of this was when he scored his 29th Test century to equal Sir Don Bradman’s record that had stood for more than three decades. He had no idea he had passed the landmark and was wondering what the applause was about until non-striker, Dilip Vengsarkar told him “Bloody hell, it is your 29th!”

(Source: AP)

Mohammad Amir’s fairytale comeback after a five-year ban from Cricket still remained a matter of controversy, with former England offspinner Graeme Swann questioning the fast bowler’s morality. Swann launched a direct attack on Amir when the Pakistan cricket team arrived in England.

Though some sections of the British Press have offered sympathy to the left-arm fast bowler, others have not been so considerate on his return to the pitch. Some of the former England players have also critisised the fast bowler’s involvement with Cricket who felt that “Amir had crushed the morality of the game”.

Other sections of British press did not sigh away from tagging the “Spot-fixer” in Amir when he picked up three wickets in the warm-up game against Somerset. The BBC ran a headline in their mobile service: ‘Spot-fixer Amir Takes Three Wickets on Return’.

The Sun quoted Swann as saying, “Amir will walk out on the green and glorious turf at Lord’s on Thursday — and it will make me feel sick. He should have been banned for life for his part in the corruption scandal of 2010. No matter how good you are, if you sell your soul for 30 pieces of silver, you have to pay the consequences and I don’t think he has.”

Swann, who retired from International cricket in December 2013, further stated that the authorities “did not create stronger deterrents in order to prevent a repeat of these offences.”

England skipper Alastair Cook had also warned that Amir should be ready to get a hard time by the England fans. “I’m sure there will be a reaction and that is right. That is part and parcel, that when you do something like that there are more consequences than just the punishment — that is something for him to cope with, whatever comes his way,” Cook said.

Amir had picked up 6/84 in the fourth Test at Lord’s in 2010 but later admitted to spot-fixing. Amir later made a comeback to International Cricket during the New Zealand series in January 2016.

Pakistan will play England in the first test match at Lord’s on July 14.

I didn’t sign up with TNA because they can’t pay: Alberto Del Rio

Seven-time WWE world heavyweight champion Alberto Del Rio on Sunday said he did not sign up with ‘TNA’ because the company simply does not have the wherewithal to pay wrestlers as WWE does.

“At the end of the day you can love what you do, but you have to be rewarded. If somebody wants to have me in their organisation, they have to pay me, and there is no other place like WWE, which is a major league of progress and growth. TNA
does not have the wherewithal as WWE does,” he told PTI in an interview.

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling is a privately held American professional wrestling promotion based in Nashville, Tennessee.

Alberto was in the city as part of his three-day visit to India, which began on July 7.

Before flying down in Bangalore, Alberto landed in Kolkata and met his fans and interacted with them.

He participated in Kolkata’s local football action with the East Bengal football club.

Asked about the reason for making WWE comeback, Alberto said it is the most important wrestling company in the world, which treats wrestlers nicely and creates global superstars.

“I had the opportunity to work for all the prestigious wrestling companies around the world in different countries, but there is no other place like WWE. I like the way they treat us and the places we go. You become a global superstar,” he said.

Asked how he remained fit before making a WWE comeback, Alberto said since he is India, he is able to spend just 60 to 90 minutes in the gym, but spends a lot of time there when he is not travelling.

“In India I am so busy and hence I am able to do 60 to 90 minutes of training in gyms. I have been eating less too,” he added.

Alberto, who played cricket with the city kids on Saturday, said he did not understand the sport, but enjoyed playing with the kids.

“I really do not know anything about cricket, but people enlightened me about the rules and regulations governing the sport. I really enjoyed the game I played with the kids. It was amazing,” he said.

Alberto had the chance to work with the Great Khali at WWE, but said they are not friends.

“I know who Khali is. We worked together in WWE. It is just we were never friends, and hence I have no interest in meeting or seeing him or even talk to him,” he said.

On Bollywood, Alberto said he does not know anything about Hindi films.

“I really don’t know any actors or actresses. I have never seen an Indian move, but I know it is pretty big and there is a lot of money,” he said.

Alberto said though he is focussed on wrestling, he would love to act in Bollywood film if an offer comes his way.

“Oh yeah, definitely. I am focussed on my wrestling career but in future, if somebody invites me to be a part of one of the films, of course I would love to do it,” he said.

Saina Nehwal best bet for Rio 2016 Olympics; PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth dark horses: Parupalli Kashyap

Rio 2016 Olympics, Rio badminton, Saina Nehwal, Saina, Nehwal, P V Sindhu, Sindhu, K Srikanth, Srikanth, Parupalli Kashyap, Kashyap, Kashyap injury, Rio India, Badminton Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu and K Srikanth will be representing India in Badmintion in the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Commonwealth Games champion P Kashyap feels London Games bronze medallist Saina Nehwal is the ‘best bet’ to win a medal for India and said P V Sindhu and K Srikanth could be the ‘dark horses’ during India’s campaign at next month’s Rio Olympics.

“Saina is the best bet, considering the rankings and her form. Sindhu and Srikanth are like underdogs, dark horses of the tournament and anything can be expected from them,” said Kashyap during the launch of a junior Delhi State ranking tournament.

The Arjuna awardee was happy with the qualification of men’s double pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth and said it was an amazing achievement for India even though he felt that winning a medal at Olympics would be a difficult task for the Indian combo.

“I would not say that Manu and Sumit are contenders for a medal since it’s a very tough competition since and this is the first time that men’s double pair has qualified. I hope that they get good a win,” said the 29-year-old, who created history by becoming the first male shuttler to reach the quarterfinals of men’s singles at 2012 London Olympics.

In women’s double, Kashyap believes that 2011 World Championship bronze medalists, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnapa will have an outside chance of winning a medal as they have always done well in big tournaments.

Kashyap, whose Olympic qualification dream was cut short after his knee injury during the German Open pre-quarterfinals in March early this year, rued the timing of the injury.

“I got injured in the first week of March and that was like a peak time. If the injury had been two months earlier to it, I would have been fine now and probably playing at Rio,” said Kashyap, who had scalped Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Minh at the 2012 London Olympics.

Kashyap, who has been recovering from his injury for last four months, said he is fit now and will be back in the international circuit in September.

“I hope that I will get entry in the Indonesia GP gold but I am not sure about my entry in the next two super series because my ranking has dropped as I have not played for last few months,” he said.

Kashyap also praised other Indian shuttlers such as Canada open winner B Sai Praneeth and US Open Semi-finalist Ajay Jayaram and said they can make a mark in the coming tournaments.

“Praneeth has always been one of those players who is about to do well. I have always regarded him as one of the most talented players but people in India have not seen much of him,” he said.

“I have a selfish interest with Ajay as he is going to be my training partner for next two months. I hope he comes back motivated and pushes me in the game,” he added.

India tour of West Indies: India opt for safety first on first day

india-m1

The opening day of India’s two-month long sojourn in the Caribbean was a portent of how things could unfurl as the series progresses and attains a graver hue. The massive stands of the Warner Park in Basseterre were thinly-populated, the strip, as had been Caribbean surfaces of late, was devoid of any life and bounce, and was more like a sluggish third-day wicket in the subcontinent, and the bowlers, some of them Test hopefuls, were largely insipid. But it served India’s purposes, as far as batsmen getting some useful red-ball practice was concerned, for they have been gorging on a diet exclusively of T20s since the turn of this year.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Friday said off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin would be key to India’s success in the Test tour of the West Indies, their first series under new head coach Anil Kumble.

Premier Futsal unsanctioned, will create unwanted issues: AIFF

Premier Futsal, Premier Futsal Luis Figo, Premier Futsal Virat Kohli, Premier Futsal India, Premier Futsal AIFF, AIFF, All India Football federation, Futsal, football, sports, sports news The first edition of Premier Futsal is set to take place in India from July 15 to 24 but there is no clarity on the schedule of matches. (Source: PTI)

All India Football Federation today said that the unsanctioned Premier Futsal, scheduled to begin on July 15, will create unnecessary issues and also expressed serious doubts about the survival of the tournament.

The AIFF has asked its state units to advise the players under their jurisdiction not to associate with Premier Futsal with its General Secretary Kushal Das saying that no domestic footballer will take part in the unsanctioned league.

“AIFF has informed FIFA and all its stakeholders that this is an unauthorised and unofficial Futsal League since AIFF is also the governing body for Futsal in India. Such unauthorised and unofficial events can result in unnecessary issues, especially integrity issues. All our stakeholders understand that and will act accordingly. We do not need to take recourse to legal action,” Das told PTI.

“I understand from various sources that there are many issues regarding the event. I have heard from many sources that most of the players like Deco have not been paid the signing amount and have refused to travel to India,” Das said.

He said sponsors would be wary to be associated with such unsanctioned events.

“Besides, I don’t know whether they have any sponsors and whether they have all the franchisees in place which raises serious doubts about the event. This is exactly what happens to such kind of unapproved events and I really wonder why any sponsor would want to associate with such events,” he said.

Premier Futsal, a franchise-based international futsal (a form of football being played indoors on a smaller field with five players in a side for 40-minute duration) tournament and promoted by an entity formed by Indian entrepreneurs, has attracted some of the world’s best players but has struggled to convince domestic players to jump on its bandwagon.

It has Portuguese football legend Luis Figo as its president and Indian cricketer Virat Kohli as ambassador. The tournament will be governed by Futsal Association of India (FAI), a body affiliated to the world body, Asociacion Mundial de Futsal (AMF). But with FIFA, the world governing body for football, and the AIFF refusing to recognise Premier Futsal, domestic players risk suspensions if they join the league.

The first edition of Premier Futsal is set to take place in India from July 15 to 24 but there is no clarity on the schedule of matches. Even the venues and the roster of the players of the proposed eight teams are not known with just a few days left for the scheduled kick-off of the tournament.

Asked if the AIFF has been able to stop its stakeholders from joining Premier Futsal, Das said, “Our stakeholders clearly understand the problems with such events and will not act in any manner to undermine the AIFF’s governing role.”

“The AIFF will announce the launch of the Official Futsal League soon. In fact, one of the reasons the players do not want to play in the unofficial League is because they know the official league will be launched soon.”

Das expressed surprise at the reports that an Indian team, reportedly selected by Futsal Association of India, will take part in the Under-17 Futsal World Cup beginning on July 11 in Paraguay.

“We are completely unaware of the unauthorised U-17 Futsal World Cup in Paraguay and do not know if any team has been sent from India,” he said.

Asked if the AIFF has written to the Sports Ministry not to allow Premier Futsal use government facilities for the league, Das said, “We have a very good relationship with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and working closely for various initiatives relating to U-17 World Cup and the BRICS U-17 Cup.

“We were one of the first federations to change our Constitution to align with the Sports code. The Ministry is fully aware of the governance structure of AIFF.”
